Ella Eyre. Frank Ocean. James Bay. Clearly, being named runner-up in the BBC's annual 'Sound Of...' poll is no snub, and we're predicting just as much success for Alessia Cara. The Canadian singer-songwriter has drawn comparisons to Lorde for her thoughtful, soulful alt-pop; forget over-manufactured, shiny, tweeny-bop pop, Alessia is the real deal. With her debut album, Know-It-All, out now, here's five things you need to know about the star-in-the-making...
1. She got her big break posting covers on YouTube
At 13 she set up her own channel, posting her versions of the likes of Jessie J's Price Tag and Beyoncé's Halo. Three years later, after building an impressive following online, a production company took notice and she eventually signed with Def Jam Recordings.
2. Taylor Swift is a fan
After Alessia performed a version of Bad Blood on BBC Radio 1's Piano Sessions, Swifty herself heard it, then invited Alessia to perform on stage with her on the 1989 world tour. Talk about an A-list endorsement.
3. Don't diss her style
She's previously joked that Ed Sheeran is her style icon: "We wear the same clothes. Flannel shirts, denim, Converse, a guitar, messy hair? That's literally me." And when people criticised an outfit she wore for a New Year's Eve performance, she hit back on Twitter: "I'm really bored of the comments about my clothes and how I choose to look on stage. I am a SINGER. Listen to me sing..."
4. The music industry's best have produced her new album
Alessia's got a crack team behind her debut record, working with producers Malay (who's collaborated with John Legend and Alicia Keys) and hotshot duo Pop & Oak (who have produced for Azealia Banks and Rihanna).
5. She's really good at
From Adele to Drake, it's uncanny.
