10 things you need to know about Alison Brie

22 Dec 2015

All Mad Men fanatics will recognise Alison Brie as Trudy Campbell, the long-suffering wife of Pete, who also happens to have an impeccable wardrobe. But since the conclusion of the critically-acclaimed show, Alison Brie has been busy working on other ventures, namely her new film Sleeping With Other People, where she stars alongside Jason Sudeikis as a serial cheater looking to change her ways. We chatted to the actress all about her new film, her recent engagement to Dave Franco, and that time she worked as a clown. Here's 10 things you need to know about the actress...

1. She's not afraid to talk about sex

GLAMOUR: Your character in Sleeping With Other People isn't afraid to talk about sex, did the script make you blush at all?

Not at all! I love talking about sex. It was one of the things that I really loved about the script actually: how candid everyone was in the way they talked about sex. It felt very familiar to me in the way that I've always talked about it with my friends, or my sister.

2. She found her role in Sleeping With Other People empowering

GLAMOUR: In the last year of film we've seen female characters that aren't afraid to exercise their sexuality, such as Amy Schumer's character in Trainwreck for example, and now your character. Did you feel empowered playing a role that perhaps wouldn't have existed five years ago?[/i]

Yes it was empowering. I think there's been a shift in how sexual women are portrayed in film. There's been a separation from the virtuous leading lady that maybe just has a peck on the lips to the seductress. It's just this whole different type of woman. It's very contemporary and I feel like this is more true to how people live in life today. It's a more accessible type of sexuality that's realistic and non-malicious. It's not meant to be scary it's just a reality.

3. She worked as a clown before becoming an actress

GLAMOUR: Is it true that you worked as a clown before becoming an actress, and if so, did your clown training help in the party scene when your character entertains kids?[/i]

It is true, I worked for a summer as a clown! My clown name was Sonny and I wore a yellow afro and made balloon animals. Yes, I think my clown training helped for the film. Also, my mother worked in childcare my whole life and I used to work for her as a teachers aid. People always come up to me when I'm on set with a group of kids and say "Wow, you're great with them! They really calm down and pay attention!"

4. Alison and Jason were encouraged to open up about their own sexual experiences on set

GLAMOUR: You and Jason Sudeikis have a great chemistry in the film, did that happen naturally?[/i]

Jason and I had never worked with each other before but we have some mutual friends so I think in general I knew that we would get along. Jason was so great. I think both of us knew the characters needed to have great chemistry so we both came at it in a very open way. He and I both shared a lot of personal information with each other immediately and Leslye (Headland) spearheaded that kind of honesty on set. She got us to talk openly about relationships that we've been in and if we can relate to positions in the film. I think that really helped create the dynamic between the characters.

5. She lived in Glasgow for a while

GLAMOUR: You studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Acting. What are your fondest memories of the city?[/i]

Dancing at The Garage, walking down Sauchiehall Street, late night chips and cheese…

6. She has tread the boards

GLAMOUR: We've seen you on stage, on TV and now on the big screen. Do you have a favourite?[/i]

I don't think I do. I think it's whatever moment I'm in, that becomes the thing that's my favourite. When I was younger I thought that I would only do theatre, and that was my passion and it was all I wanted to do. I really looked down on TV when I was a teenager and pretentious - then of course I spent most of my life working in television and it was my favourite thing ever. And now that those shows have come to a close and I've been working in movies I've been having so much fun doing that. I would be excited to do some theatre again.

7. She played long-suffering wife Trudy Campbell in Mad Men

GLAMOUR: What was your favourite memory from your Mad Men days? Do you think you'll have a Mad Men reunion?[/i]

Any favourite moments will have to be clothing-related because Trudy's wardrobe was the best. I got to finish on a high because I think one of Trudy's all-time best outfits was in the last shot of Pete and Trudy walking out to their private jet. She's wearing a pink coat and fur hat. It's pretty epic.

I think we'll have a reunion to binge watch old episodes.

8. She's starring in a film with Dakota Johnson & Rebel Wilson

GLAMOUR: We're really excited about How to Be Single. Did you have fun working on set with Rebel Wilson and Dakota Johnson? And do you have any funny memories from the set?[/i]

I had so much fun! Dakota and I actually worked together on The Five Year Engagement years ago, which she'd told me was the first comedy she'd ever done and it was the same for me. It was really fun to reconnect with her and Rebel is so funny and sweet - I really had a blast working on that movie and I think it came out great!

There was definitely a notable New York moment! We were shooting out late-night in bars and one night we were told not to go back to our trailers just yet because people were fornicating against the building in front of our trailer. We had to let them finish.

9. She's getting married to Dave Franco

GLAMOUR: You've recently got engaged - Congratulations! Are you now a Pinterest addict? [/i]

I will admit I did join Pinterest about two weeks after I got engaged. I'd never been on Pinterest before and was like "Ok, I guess now's the time", but I'm not super addicted. It sort of went as fast as it came. It was a very useful tool to hone my ideas very quickly and then I was like "Ok - I got it."

10. And she WONT be a bridezilla

GLAMOUR: And do you think you'll be a bridezilla?[/i]

I don't think so. I couldn't be more laid back.

Watch Sleeping With Other People In Cinemas on January 1.
