There's nothing better than getting a fresh set of acrylic nails - it makes you feel like a new woman. But the problem with acrylics is that they come with a fair bit of maintenance, and can also weaken and damage your nails if they aren't removed properly.
There are plenty of horror stories on the net, but one that sticks in our minds is that of Amelia Perrin's, a beauty blogger from Essex, whose story went viral in 2016.
She took to Twitter to show her followers her acrylic nail situation at the time, and it wasn't pretty.[ id="807301427320287232"] [ id="807301593544749060"] [ id="807303120221040640"]
Amelia explained that despite having them taken off professionally before, her nails were still left weak, which only made it worse when she took them off herself the next time.
The story is now going viral again, so we thought we'd catch up with Amelia to see how she's getting on. She told us:
"I would get acrylics for years straight because every time I thought about going cold turkey and they removed them (properly!) in the shop they were paper thin, painful and ugly. When this picture was taken I was frustrated and just wanted them off so removed them at home, I cut everything and filed them down, plied them with clear nail varnish and cuticle oil every hour for a few days to try and thicken and condition them, and took two types of biotin. By day five they were still ugly and painful but at least they looked like nails."[ id="809178196864368640"]
"Now I’ve had my acrylics off for two years and they’re back to as healthy as they were before, I’ve kept them polished constantly so they’re always reinforced to stop breaks, and I used creams/oils, and always a ‘gel-like’ top and base coat to thicken them."[ id="874716860784271360"]
"I would, of course, love to have my beautiful acrylics back but I was spending HOURS per fortnight in the shop, spending a fortune and ruining my nails in the process."
So there you have it - although her nails looked at the point of no return, with a little a lot of TLC, Amelia's nails are, thankfully, as good as new. Rule number one of acrylics - don't rip them off!
