The Glam Hijabi: My top conservative fashion styling tips

Sartorial inspiration.

14 Apr 2018

Introducing our columnist, 21-year-old Somali-born beauty blogger and Instagram star, Hani Sidow. London-based Hani is breaking taboos about being a beauty-loving Hijab wearer, helping inspire other women on Muslim beauty, fashion and modesty. In her latest column for GLAMOUR, she shares her views on modest fashion and shares her sartorial tips for styling a midi skirt five ways.

"We all want to look our best at all times, but as a Muslim woman I often have difficulties finding an outfit that is both modest and on trend. I often struggle with dresses - the slit might be positioned in an awkward place where it can’t be sewn up, or sometimes the hemline isn't quite long enough.

I view myself as a representation of my religion, so the way that I dress and present myself to the world affects people's view of a 'young Muslim woman'.

This doesn’t mean I can’t dress up or show my style and personality through my sartorial choices, though. I love dressing up and while sourcing that perfect modest garment can be a challenge, the fashion industry is certainly making headway.

One of my go-to garments is the trusty maxi skirt. When I began wearing my headscarf, I started wearing maxi skirts and stopped wearing jeans - and I've had some great fun styling them. Here I break down five ways to style yours like a pro...

THE FITTED

A fitted maxi skirt is perfect for any occasion when paired with a longline jacket or blazer. Here, I style a fitted white maxi skirt from Prettylittlething.com with a white blazer, which adds a perfect finish. Adding a blazer also makes it modest enough to wear as it covers everything you want to cover whilst still giving you that really feminine figure. Thankfully there's now many online websites that offer fitted maxi skirts. I usually purchase mine from Boohoo, Missguided or Prettylittlething.

THE PLEATED

Coming up to spring and summer, there's no better way to style your outfit than with a pleated coloured skirt. Here @Aishaa_mo styles a Khaki maxi skirt from Zara in such a casual but effortless way. She pairs it with a simple T-shirt and a leather jacket. I love the details of pleated skirts; they've been on trend for a while now and I hope the trend stays because I am so here for it!

THE FLORAL

Another style we all love for spring/summer season is the floral print. It's the ultimate way to take an outfit from casual to glam. I love how @Ashwaaq_fidar has styled this floral printed maxi skirt with a simple pair of heels and a plain red blouse. The colours of her outfit all complement each other so well. I think a floral maxi skirt should be a staple in anyone’s wardrobe this season.

THE DENIM

Denim maxi skirts have been a trend recently and I love how @adam_virdi has styled this outfit on @lifelongpercussion featuring a buttoned denim maxi skirt. He has kept the outfit casual with a turtleneck and sock boots with the main focus being on the Denim skirt from DrDenim. Although this skirt has buttons going down the middle, these have been kept open and mixed with a fitted black maxi skirt underneath. A maxi skirt is always so much fun to play with and there really aren’t any rules.

THE BLACK

When in doubt, go for black. A black skirt is a must for everyone’s wardrobe. It is the perfect colour to mix and match with anything and complements pretty much every colour. I am obsessed with how @makeupbysamiraa has matched a satin yellow shirt with a black maxi skirt from Missguided here. Although the skirt is super simple and elegant, the little lace up detail gives it a nice little twist and adds a playful touch.

I hope you've found all your maxi skirt inspirations here and enjoy styling your maxi skirts at home. Stay tuned for my next column where I will be talking about my favourite makeup brands for darker skin tones.

See you in a fortnight…"
