"What are they asking for? Trouble."

Donna Karan has done an almighty backpedal following a huge backlash against her defending her friend, the now-fired Hollywood sex pest Harvey Weinstein, and saying that some of his sexual harassment victims were "asking for it".

While being interviewed on the red carpet at the Cinemoi Fashion Film Awards in Hollywood, she was asked for her thoughts on the Weinstein case. Weinstein, one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, has been fired from his production company Miramax after a showed that he had paid off women he had harassed for decades.

Karan said: "I think we have to look at ourselves. Obviously, the treatment of women all over the world is something that has always had to be identified. Certainly in the country of Haiti where I work, in Africa, in the developing world, it's been a hard time for women.

"To see it here in our own country is very difficult, but I also think how do we display ourselves? How do we present ourselves as women? What are we asking? Are we asking for it by presenting all the sensuality and all the sexuality?"

The Weinsteins were "wonderful people," she added, before gaily reiterating her point that women were asking for it by not dressing like nuns.

"You look at everything all over the world today and how women are dressing and what they are asking by just presenting themselves the way they do. What are they asking for? Trouble."

WE GET THE POINT DONNA, YOU CAN STOP NOW.

Unsurprisingly, reaction to Karan's statement was not filled with glowing joy.

In which Donna Karan, when discussing Harvey Weinstein, wonders if women are "asking for it" by the way they dress. I feel a rage blackout coming on -H

Donna Karan just single handedly ruined her career and any chance of being respected as a champion of women's causes ever again. Wow.

Thought about buying this Donna Karan dress but realized I would then be "asking for" sexual advances.

Karan's PR agency released a statement on her behalf saying that she was "truly sorry" and that her incredibly lengthy statement saying that women are asking for it by dressing in clothes does not reflect what she believes. To which – hmmm.

"My statements were taken out of context and do not represent how I feel about the current situation concerning Harvey Weinstein," the statement read. "I believe that sexual harassment is NOT acceptable and this is an issue that MUST be addressed once and for all regardless of the individual.

"I am truly sorry to anyone that I offended and everyone that has ever been a victim."

Good luck recovering from this one Donna Karan, block caps can only get you so far.
