Gigi Hadid has apologised for her Melania Trump impression at the American Music Awards on Sunday.
The supermodel released a hand-written statement on Twitter apologising to anyone who was offended by her comedy skit after recieveing heavy criticism.
In the statement, she wrote:
"I was honoured to host the AMAs last night and to work with some of the most respected writers in the business.
I removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far, and whether or not you choose to see it, what remained was done in good humor with no bad intent.
I too have been the center of a nationally televised comedy skit that poked fun at my actions, and was able to find the humor in it.
I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run. I apologize to anyone that I offended & have only the best wishes for our country. Respectfully x Gigi."
The supermodel came under fire after impersonating Melania Trump while hosting the AMAs.
Gigi was called a racist and was told to "stick to modelling" by social media users after putting on an Eastern European accent and mocking the soon-to-be first lady's pout.
In a joke referring to Melania's recent plagiarism scandal which saw her being accused of copying a speech by Michelle Obama, Gigi said: "I love my husband, President Barack Obama. And our children Sasha and Malia."
Gigi faced a huge social media backlash with angry viewers criticizing the skit. One user wrote: "Gigi Hadid showed the highest form of disrespect possible to the next first lady. Unforgivable!"
Another tweeted: "I respected and liked Gigi until she made fun of Melania. If someone did that to Michelle Obama they'd be called racist, mysoginist, etc"[ id="800551319861886977"]
However, many others did see the funny side...[ id="800508522521915392"]
We can't decide which of Gigi Hadid's AMA outfits we like the most
