This period poverty campaign encouraging dads to get involved in the 'bloody conversation' is just what we need

If the idea of having to have a conversation with your Dad about periods makes you squirm, you're not alone. Few things are more awkward in life than chatting to your parents about puberty, and when you're a teenage girl, the secrecy and shame around women's bodies can make it even tougher to talk have an open conversation about that once-a-month fact of life: menstruation.

That's precisely why Hey Girls, a social enterprise launched to help tackle period poverty in the UK, have kickstarted a nationwide campaign to get the conversation flowing around periods - specifically, for the Dads in our lives.

The campaign, called , aims to encourage Dads to feel more confident speaking to their daughters about periods, and comes in the wake of new research that reveals a persistent stigma around menstruation.

Hey Girls, who surveyed 1500 men on all things period-related, found that one in three Dads feel unprepared to have conversations about periods with their kids, while 50% of those surveyed said they’ve never chatted to their daughters about periods.

And when it comes to shopping for period products, Dads are similarly as unprepared. Research showed that a third admitted they’ve never purchased sanitary products.

In a bid to stop menstruation feeling like such a taboo subject, Hey Girls have teamed up with much-loved British actor Michael Sheen to kick off a nationwide initiative encouraging men to "join the bloody conversation", alongside a free information booklet to download online, which serves as a beginners guide to menstruation.

The #Pads4Dads movement also has a useful for Dads, which includes hot chocolate, a range of sanitary products, and a guide written by Dads for Dads, with all they need to know about the subject.

Speaking about the campaign Michael said: "It’s awkward for Dads to have this chat because chances are, they didn’t learn about periods in school. Believe me, we want to be supportive, but there’s almost no information out there aimed at Dads. Let’s not leave Dads out of the bloody conversation!"

Celia Hodson, Founder of Hey Girls, said the key to destigmatising periods lay in circulating knowledge.

"Education is so important to break down the myths and taboo that still surround periods. Everyone in my family is totally used to chatting about periods now but I do understand talking to teenagers about puberty can be awkward.

"However, for Dads of daughters with no female relatives around, it can be more than that – it’s often quite scary. We wanted to create something empowering to give Dads a helping hand."
