Supermodel, charity ambassador, coding supremo and entrepreneur: Karlie Kloss's CV could easily overshadow men and women's twice her age. Oh, and she's managed these feats by the tender age of 25.
Not one to rest on her laurels, Karlie also recently teamed up with Away on a range of suitcases and has now been unveiled Estée Lauder's newest Global Spokesmodel and Brand Ambassador. Karlie joins the current roster, which includes all the big names, like Carolyn Murphy, Fei Fei Sun, Gabriella Wilde, Hilary Rhoda, Joan Smalls, Kendall Jenner, Misty Copeland and Yang Mi.
"It's a dream come true. It really is," says Karlie of the career coup. "My entire career, having a beauty contract has been at the top of my bucket list. From the very start, my list of career dreams always included “Cover of American Vogue” and “Estée Lauder beauty contract.” When I was on an airplane commuting between my life as a high school student in St. Louis and my parallel life as a fashion model in NYC, I would journal about my dreams. I have to find that journal that says, "Bucket List: Estée Lauder beauty contract." It's surreal, and I'm really grateful and excited."
And while she's absolutely killing it on the catwalks right now, Karlie's career almost looked very different.
She explained: "I wouldn't say that I really set out knowing that this would be my career. I was first discovered in a mall in St. Louis, Missouri and at that point I thought I was going to follow in my father’s footsteps to one day become “Dr. Kloss.” I was sure that was my life path, so even when I started my modeling career and started traveling the world and working, I really, for the first few years, thought of it more as an after-school hobby. It wasn’t until I graduated high school and moved to New York that I was like, "Alright, I'm doing this. I'm going to give my all.”
So how does she do it? GLAMOUR has the low-down on Karlie's stellar career, her ultimate travel tips and, of course, how she looks so good doing it all. Talk about the ultimate #girlboss inspo.
Working out and meditating keep me grounded
My schedule doesn’t always allow for a ton of downtime, especially when I’m traveling. That said, it’s really important to recharge your mind and body — even if it’s just for a few minutes. I work out three to four times a week, and when I’m in between meetings or have a few minutes to spare, I’ll meditate or listen to a podcast or audiobook. Taking the time to do things that will strengthen your mind and body is so important.
Running is my secret to beating jet lag
I push myself to move. After a long flight, I’ll work out at the hotel gym or go on a run to explore my new surroundings. While it’s sometimes a struggle to get moving, having that extra burst of energy helps me stay up and adjust to the time change.
My pared back in-flight beauty regime
Planes can be really dry, so I try to drink a lot of water before and during my flight to stay hydrated. On long flights, I use Melatonin drops to help me sleep and I’ll also shamelessly do face masks mid-flight to refresh my skin. Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair PowerFoil mask is one of my favorites. I also carry my favourite snack, dark chocolate.
My most memorable trip was tracing my ancestry
When I was 19, my entire extended family traveled to Denmark to retrace our family heritage. We visited the towns and cities where my ancestors are from and even had the opportunity to reconnect with Danish cousins I never knew I had! It was such an incredible and unforgettable experience.
My travel bucket list is growing by the day - and now includes space
St. Louis, to spend time with my family, is my favourite place to visit. Or any beach will do the trick! I’m really fortunate that my career allows me to travel to so many amazing countries and cities around the world, but there are still so many places I want to see. India, Antarctica and anywhere in Africa are currently at the top of my list. I’d also love to travel to space some day!
I've partnered with Away because of its intersection between fashion, technology and travel — three things that are such a large part of my own career
Our mission at Kode With Klossy is to empower young girls to become the next generation of leaders in tech. A large piece of this mission is to expose our scholars to new industries and role models. As a female-founded company that’s using technology in really interesting ways, Away felt like the perfect partner to engage with our scholars. This collection was inspired by the travel needs of our Kode With Klossy scholars, who all have exciting journeys ahead of them. Today’s young traveler and student always has her laptop with her, so we created a backpack with a custom laptop sleeve and added pockets to ensure all tech items are organised.
has collaborated with Kode With Klossy (the non-profit organisation founded by Karlie Kloss, which empowers girls to learn to code and become leaders in tech) to create a capsule collection that supports the modern traveller as they navigate the world, online and off.
