The colder season is the prime time for a trip to the hair salon and if you've got no idea which new hairstyle to plump for, we've enlisted hair supremo, Larry King, who counts Gigi Hadid, Pixie Lott and Zayn Malik among his clients and just so happens to be one of GLAMOUR's new columnists, to break down the five key hairstyles that are going to be big news this season.
Over to you, Larry...
In the , we’re definitely starting to see an evolution of women asking for more individuality and attitude from their hairstyle. A new hairdo can be so empowering, it can make you feel like stronger, more confident and ready to take on the world. It can define our mood and how people perceive us. Whatever you go with, talk to your hairdresser about your hair texture, you’ll always get the best out of it if you put your texture first. My favourite trends for this season are these 5 badass looks...
1. The jaw-skimming bob
This super sassy jaw-skimming bob is reminiscent of moody Parisian cool girls. This style suits a heavy fringe and extreme blondes or rich chestnut browns. Wear it ruffled, rubbing a little texture clay through the lengths to give a messy but chic edge and allow the front corners to curl around following the natural contours of your cheekbones.
2. The ruffled Frenchie crop
We’ve had a lot of requests in the salon recently from women that want to go from long to super short. There’s been a lot more hair hitting the salon floor than normal. The pixie crop is back and it means business. Portia Freeman is the latest to go for the chop and with her signature dreamy bleach, it looks super cool. What’s important about this look is to keep it soft around the hairline and choppy enough that you can rough it up and move it around.
3. Brushed out waves
Beach waves have been a big story for a while now and with the release of the Dyson Airwrap, they’re easier than ever to achieve at home. I think a great update for the winter season is to brush them out, use a soft bristle brush and brush them gently. This blends the ringlets into soft, luxe shiny solid waves which looks more glamorous and luxurious for this time of year.
I was one of the first people to test the Dyson Airwrap styling tool, so did it live up to the hype?
4. High volume big blow dry
For a glam evening, out it’s all about the big blow-dry. If you want to get this look, book an appointment at a good salon. Achieving this can be tricky so it’s worth getting a professional to do it for you. Get them to pin it into rollers until you're ready to go out. Release the pins and shake out the curls, spritzing with a good hairspray; my favourite is Redken’s Windblown. I love this look brushed off the face with lots of volume and a super luxe shiny finish.
5. Wild child texture
Don’t forget about texture; sometimes a little rock chic texture goes along way. Clay has long been left on the men’s shelf but it’s definitely worth buying a pot or stealing your boyfriend's if you want a bit of 'wild child' texture. Distribute the clay between your hands and then rub it through your hair, rubbing your palms back and forth. This gives you a more grungy, ruffled vibe, which says 'I’m too busy having fun to spend time combing my hair.'
