A throwback to when Leonardo DiCaprio FINALLY won an Oscar and broke the internet

04 Mar 2018

Leonardo DiCaprio pretty much broke the internet with his Oscar win in 2016, finally taking home some well-deserved recognition for his impressive career.

He bagged an Oscar for his role in The Revenant, and after he went on stage, the Internet exploded. Like seriously exploded...

Leonardo DiCaprio FINALLY won an Oscar

Leo spawned a multitude of memes thanks to his losing streak - missing out on an Academy Award a staggering five times since his first nomination for What's Eating Gilbert Grape way back in 1994. The world held their collective breath as the Best Actor result was revealed and the internet exploded when it was revealed he'd FINALLY won for The Revenant.

He played it cool and failed to mention that he'd been waiting over 20 years to hold the statue in his hand. Instead he said something deep about the planet: "Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take this night for granted."

Proud of you, Leo.

The ultimate reaction has to be from his BFF, Kate Winslet, who was all teary-eyed when he won...

Same Kate, same.

Leo kept his acceptance speech short and sweet, saying: "Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take this night for granted."

The mega star had previously been nominated for What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), The Aviator (2004), Blood Diamond (2006) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). He was also nominated for best picture as a producer.

Although he didn't say what we were all thinking during his speech, he did make us chuckle while getting his Oscar engraved. Speaking to the woman doing the engraving, he said,

"Do you do this every year? I wouldn't know."

It's no secret that everyone and their mother wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to win the Oscar. After FIVE nominations and no golden statuette, the man deserved a win - even Adele was supporting him...

The singer took to Instagram to show her support for Leo (in an adorably dorky way). She said: "Good luck Leo! Everyone loves you because you're the best. Meet me at the clock anytime bruv!"

We love the idea of Adele and Leo, arms stretched, at the helm of the Titanic. Well done again, Leo!
