Lilac eyeshadow is the most flattering beauty trend for spring... here's how to pull off the look

How to take it from the runway to real life...

Ultra violet may have been named Pantone's colour of the year for 2018, but when it comes to makeup, a softer, muted lilac has been having its moment on the eyes. And, oh, it is pretty.

Celebrity Makeup Artist, Tobi Henney (), says: "Lilac shadow used in a subtle way can be the perfect eye look for every day."

A subtle wash of pastel purple was spotted on the runway at Pascal Millet and Sophia Webster. Zero eyeliner and little to no mascara was seen at both shows, making for an even softer effect on the delicate eye colour.

Hollywood makeup artist, , says: "Lilac works very well on pale skin tones. I’d like to say it’s the new taupe."

Jillian recommends mimicking the runway and wearing the shade solo, suggesting we "swipe it onto eyelids and wear alone for a bit of definition." Try , £20, Jillian Dempsey.

Tobi suggests using the new Glossier Lidstar in Lily for the perfect lilac look. "Use your fingertip to blend out the edges for a pop of colour."

While a pastel lilac looks particularly flattering on paler skin tones, Stila's UK Lead Makeup Artist, Sascha Jackson, says it's a versatile colour that can be worn by warmer tones too.

Who could forget Solange, well ahead of the trend, at NYFW in 2016?

Using a deeper, yet still pastel lilac shadow, her eyes looked fierce. The trick is to use eyeshadows that pack a lot of pigment, or try layering a few purple shades together to make the colour stronger.

A similar colour was worn by models at Jour/ne, with a gloss applied over the top for a dewy finish. One theme remained the same: no mascara or eyeliner. It seems this colour is a strong enough statement on its own. Could it be any simpler?

If you can't do without your eyeliner, Sasha says: "I love to team lilac with a navy eyeliner to enhance and bring out the colour." Try , £15, Stila.

As for the rest of your makeup? Keep it just as simple. "Team your eyes with subtle nudey-cool pink tones on the lips and cheeks to allow the eyes to really stand out," says Sasha.

Whichever way you want to wear it, lilac is the trend to try this season.
