Fans of the brand’s discontinued Hyper Real foundation were predictably psyched when this launch was announced back in January... as were all highlighting beauty buffs. Unlike MAC’s previous highlighters, this one comes via a palette and offers three different shades that they say provide ‘supercharged, ecstatic-in-love-level radiance’. We’re already into it.

Fair hair, pale skin, blue eyes and freckled. Having spent my teenage years blissfully unaware of what a single blemish felt like, I’m being punished in my twenties by irregular bouts of what feels like acne. I’m never not armed with a full set of lash extensions and at least 6 lip balms on my desk. I don’t wear much makeup - and never even consider ‘amping things up’ for ‘an evening look’ - but will hand over every penny I own for a dewy highlighter or luxe-y serum.
WHAT I USUALLY LOOK FOR IN A HIGHLIGHTER:
Generally keener on a liquid highlight - Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Wand is my go-to - I’m not totally adverse to powders, providing they’re not too heavy. Gold undertones tend to pack more punch on my skin tone and work better in the summer with a tan, while rosier ones look more natural all year round.
MAC HYPER REAL GLOW REVIEW:
As a fan of MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish highlighting powder, I was one of the many eagerly anticipating their latest drop.
A highlighting palette offering three shades from pink to peach to golden, it is a one-stop shop for year-round highlighting that flatters skin tones in the darkest depths of winter right through to the heady heights of summer.
The powder formula is wonderfully creamy and there’s therefore minimal fallout, meaning less waste as it’s transferred from palette to cheekbone. Being a powder, it’s naturally very buildable - a surplus trait when you consider the incredible depth of pigment in a single swipe.
With such a impressively luminous payoff, it’s arguably too heavy to be an every-day staple (even for an over-zealous highlight applier such as myself). If I were the type to adapt my makeup for an evening, then this palette would be my absolute touch-up go-to. In fact, I’m leaving it on my desk to become exactly that.
