Model Sonny Turner talks beauty standards, boundaries and why she doesn't care about being called 'plus-size'

"You can call me what ever you want!"

30 Jul 2018

A 20-year-old, 5"10', brunette with a 38DD chest, 34-inch waist and 46-inch hips, Sonny Turner's career as a model may see her personal stats discussed and divulged by her agencies to book jobs, but she doesn't so much care for labels.

And with huge campaigns for the likes of Primark, Figleaves and ASOS - as well as 243k loyal Instagram followers - under her belt, it's no doubt that it is her refreshing attitude to this often-problematic industry that has seen her career catapulted in the last 12 months.

We caught up with our favourite Brummie beauty to discover more...

On her big break...

My first big break was my first Aerie campaign where they flew me to New York and Cuba. That was my first time in America!

On her first-ever photoshoot...

It was for my friend's university project and I didn't think anything of it, but I saw the images and was like "damn, I actually am good at this" but I didn’t know what bracket I'd fall under. Back then I wasn’t considered plus-size but I also wasn’t skinny enough.

On her campaign #goals...

I have a list of brands that I want [campaigns with] but I feel like they’re all achievable. I would love to be on the cover of a magazine - Vogue, I-D or GLAMOUR!

On her dream career if she weren't in fashion...

I would be a social worker! I still would do it; I love helping people.

On the pits and peaks of her job...

[What I] love the most is the freedom to travel. The worst [thing] is how last-minute the industry is.

On the one thing she'd change about the industry...

I'd change beauty standards and boundaries - so everyone has a fair shot at everything! No matter your size, race or who your parents are.

On the vibe on-set during groundbreaking campaigns for ASOS and Figleaves...

It's 10,000 percent [different]. It’s like we’ve been booked to be ourselves, so for me personally, I feel more confident and comfortable.

On the terms 'plus-size' and 'curve'...

I don’t mind labels because labels have been used to franchise bigger women in the industry. 'Plus-size' is a nicer way of saying 'fat', and 'curve' is a nice way of saying 'plus-size'. You can call me whatever you want, I don’t care about society's labels on me because I know myself!

On her one message for young people struggling with their image...

My message would be - IT'S OK TO BE DIFFERENT. In fact, it’s amazing being different. Being unique is beautiful and you don’t need to change yourself in order to be beautiful.
