It turns out that wine can actually make you think more clearly, so God bless the grapes

In news that's just perfect for the weekend, apparently, wine is good for your brain. Yep, just like you, we all knew it too. The gracious grape not only helps us destress and get our dance on - it's also now been said to make us think more clearly.

, low levels of alcohol are actually pretty good for the brain. Of course, if you get absolutely trashed, you'll end up with a head as fuzzy as a corgi's behind, but with just the right amount, it seems you can actually expand your usual mental capacity.

Now for the sciencey bit. While we're going about our daily business, proteins such as beta-amyloid accumulate in your nervous system and these are actually waste products which can cause diseases like Alzheimer's. Our central nervous systems, however, are pretty snazzy, and they clean up these little bits of protein while we sleep, flushing away toxic products.

Things like exercise are known to make the glymphatic system (the bit that does the cleaning) work more efficiently, and now it seems that wine does too.

Lead author of the study, Maiken Nedergaard M.D., D.M.Sc., explained:

"Prolonged intake of excessive amounts of ethanol is known to have adverse effects on the central nervous system. However, in this study we have shown for the first time that low doses of alcohol are potentially beneficial to brain health, namely, it improves the brain's ability to remove waste."

A cleaner brain = a more efficient brain, which is less likely to be susceptible to health problems later down the line. Bottoms up!
