Running doesn’t come naturally to everyone but there are so many ways to make it easier. Here we list the best apps to teach, motivate and track your runs...
What does it do? It does what it says on the tin - takes you from a couch potato to being able to run 5K in nine weeks.
USP: It really is for novices who don’t know where to start. It considers the fact you may find it difficult to run or lack fitness, but, most importantly, it takes things slow. One of the worst things is not taking things steadily when you’re learning to run. If you don’t, you’re much more likely to give up. You’ll do three 30-minute runs a week over the nine week period and by the end you’ll not only be able to run 5K but you’ll be able to do it easily.
Is it suitable for beginners? Absolutely - it’s made for them. If you’re returning to fitness having taken a break, you may find this too slow so opt for a more challenging running app.
What does it do? It allows you to track a range of exercises, not just running.
USP: It’s focussed totally around motivation. You are able to create your own target and Endomondo will provide audio feedback on your performance which is invaluable for progression. It will point out whether you’re lagging behind or you’re about to set a new personal best. You can also compete against yourself or others which always makes you want to do better. Add bonus is that it links to MyFitnessPal and logs calories burned unlike some other apps.
Is it suitable for beginners? You can use it but it won’t teach you how to run. Probably best for those already at an intermediate stage.
What does it do? Monitors your progress over a range of exercises.
USP: It allows you to set a calorie, distance or pace goal depending on what your motivation is. It also has an auto-pause function which is fantastic as it stops recording you when you stop. Oh and then there’s the Runtastic Earth View function that allows you to watch your workout in 3D. Cool, huh?
Is it suitable for beginners? This is a good choice for beginners as it has a built in audio coach who will teach you how to do it.
Price: Free or £4.99 for premium
What does it do? Tracks and maps all of your runs.
USP: It gives you audio feedback and stats for every mile you run. If you’re someone that needs encouragement in order to be motivated, this is ideal. By tracking your run too, it helps you to visualise the effort you’re putting in.
Is it suitable for beginners? Yes.
Price: £4.99 per month or £22.99 per year
What does it do? Offers complete support for runners of all levels.
USP: It doesn’t just allow you to set challenges per run but actually allows you to set challenges over a longer period of time. For example running 10 miles in a week. It’s audio-coach is excellent for beginners who need instruction and it’s interface is incredibly simple to use. You can also connect to a global runners network by sharing your performances and challenges on social media which is excellent for motivation. It’s the number one running app on iTunes for a reason.
