The Victoria’s Secret show returned to its spiritual home of New York city and the Angels threw everything at it to make it the most epic show yet.
You can read our full show review below but before you do that, cast your eyes over this epic behind-the-scenes video of the Angels backstage lip-syncing to Ariana Grande's Thank U, Next...
The girls looked like they had a blast at the greatest show on earth, which took place earlier this month and will be coming to a TV screen near you in December.
Here's what happened when we were invited to watch the VS show live...
In one of the most impressive moments of powerful branding one could ever see, a fact stood out amongst the rest of projected statements on the screen: 70 percent of the TV audience were female. Yaaaas. Looking around me at the screaming fans manically clapping, the gaze of this audience wasn’t male, it was female. It suddenly struck me: this is one of the only times I have seen women in a massive public arena – to be watched by another staggering 1.4 billion people – celebrating and clapping fellow females. To quote GLAMOUR’s November cover star and one of nine certified wing wearing angels, Stella Maxwell, “this was a powerful moment for women.” In 2018, we need this more than ever, no matter what your opinion on the Victoria’s Secret show is.
Alongside the abs upon abs, the bums of steel and, of course, the small matter of the Victoria’s Secret underwear itself, the themed worlds which punctuated the show illustrated that subtlety is not in the brand’s dictionary. It was the mecca of ‘extra’ in the best way possible. At one stage Rita Oraappeared in an ensemble akin to a dominatrix beret wearer whilst rain literally flooded down from the ceiling and Bella Hadid high fived the British singer. This is not for the sparkle-phobic or faint-hearted.
The proverbial rain didn’t stop there; in the section dedicated to the Mary Katrantzou’s Victoria’s Secret collaboration, Leonie Anderson managed to out-sparkle the heavily embellished floral underwear she was modelling with her heavy serving of sass. And nothing says, “making it rain” like a $1 million-dollar Swarovski fantasy bra. This year, the honour of wearing the infamous ‘fantasy bra’ was bestowed on Elsa Hosk who took all the sparkle in her stride.
Air kissing is something that Victoria’s Secret Angels have got down to a ‘T.’ But no one has mastered the art of being an Angel quite like ‘the greatest of all time,’ Adriana Lima, who has walked in the infamous show for TWENTY ENTIRE YEARS. Visibly crying, the model, who announced just minutes before the show that she would be retiring, took to the runway before hanging up her wings for the final time. The segment of the show, dedicated solely to Adriana, came after the 37-year-old model posted on Instagram, “Dear Victoria. Thank you for showing me the world, sharing your secrets, and most importantly not just giving me wings but teaching me to fly. And all the ❤️ to the best fans in the 🌎! Love, Adriana.” We are in mourning.
Whilst some Angel’s careers came to an end, others took flight for the first time. Most notably of all, perhaps, was Winnie Harlow. After not making the final cut for the show in previous years, Winnie - who has shown that her skin condition, vitiligo, is no barrier to modelling success – was fighting back tears as she stepped onto the Victoria’s Secret runway for the first time. As she strutted passed the heavenly Shawn Mendes, Winnie raised her hand to the sky and thanked God for allowing her to realise her ultimate dream.
No self-respecting fashion show is complete without throwing a good FROW to the world’s media. Naturally, as the most-watched fashion show on earth, the Victoria’s Secret show didn’t shy away from the A-list. Speaking to Bella Hadid backstage beforehand, it was obvious that there was one FROWER she was particularly interested in, “her sexy ass boyfriend,” The Weeknd.
But she wasn’t the only sister gushing about her lover. Whilst Victoria's Secret's official makeup artist, the equally iconic Charlotte Tilbury, cast her wand/brush over Gigi Hadid, the 23-year-old talked exclusively with GLAMOURabout her relationship with Zayn Malik. “I am so obsessed with him to play hard to get, these days,” and boy was Zayn in for a treat - despite not attending the show.
The celebrity hype crew didn’t stop there, as the Kardashians Klan, including Kris Jenner, joined the Hadid family in downtown New York. Prior to the show, Kendall also exclusively spoke to GLAMOUR - after gushing over our Kylie Jenner cover - about THAT Halloween moment. “They could have been out there with me,” Kendall laughed, gesturing behind herself before continuing with, “they really could have been! All of them could actually do it but Kourtney has the sass; she would be a good-bad angel.”
Away from the gossip-inducing FROW, it’s undoubtable that the women who are cast in what is self-billed as the “Superbowl of supermodels,” (due to the strict selection process) have worked damn hard for this moment. Almost as hard as it is to clap continuously for a forty-minute long-show – trying to out hype an eager American audience can cause physical damage. Just so you know.
There is no way to cheat yourself onto the Victoria’s Secret runway and the Angels aren’t winging it. But above all the sass, the sisterhood of the models is something that sets this event apart. As Stella Maxwell stated beforehand, “I believe in women encouraging each other and being there for each other and us all being united. We are a family. I think the show really represents that.” The Victoria’s Secret Show 2018 was a all singing, all sparkling illustration of Stella’s words and long may this ethos continue. You. Go. Gurlz.
All the backstage beauty details you need to know
Following last night’s incredible runway show in New York, we were keen to dig for the details on the make-up secrets behind the models.
Charlotte Tilbury was the makeup brains behind the operation and the official sponsor of last night’s show. The makeup guru describes the look as 'a natural enhancement of your own beauty'. Basically, making the most of what your Mama gave you. Think bright eyes and flawless skin.[image id="OPe0Dv15Dro"]
“The skin is all about enhanced goddess skin, it’s natural and flawless at its best!” Charlotte says about her Angel crafted complexion.
Charlotte credits her award-winning Charlotte’s Magic Cream as the secret behind the runway glow. An instant turnaround cream for the complexion that floods the skin with moisture and provides the most beautiful, glowing base for makeup. It is made up of oils and actives that feed the skin. Hyaluronic acid and peptides that give a plump-effect to the complexion, vitamin C and E that brighten and soothe the skin, and Frangipani and Aloe Vera.
Charlotte uses the eye-morphing Bigger Brighter Eyes eye palette in Exagger-Eyes and the heavenly, eye-gilding Eyes to Mesmerise in Rose Gold. Using a smudger brush, Charlotte applied the metallic rose gold shade underneath the lower lash line to make the eyes naturally pop.
Unsurprisingly, both products sold out earlier this year but are back due to that popular demand, which tells us that this stuff works.
Speaking about last night’s looks, Charlotte said: ‘One of my inspirations for the look was inspired by the healthy, happy, naturally flawless beauty look of Gisele – she embodies that signature fresh, glowing ANGEL gorgeousness!’
