Christian Bale is a British actor perhaps best known for his physical preparations for roles, which have included dropping to an emaciated and skeletal 8st 9lbs in The Machinist and bulking up to "Olympian physique" for American Psycho. Born in Wales to English parents, Bale went into acting at an early age, first appearing in an advert for fabric softener Lenor in 1982. After appearing in the made-for-television film Anastasia: The Mystery Of Anna in 1986, he was recommended by his co-star to Steven Spielberg for a role in Empire Of The Sun, which went on to earn him Best Performance by a Juvenile Actor from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures. Following this, Bale continued with a steady flow of film roles, and, in 1999, appeared in the controversial American Psycho. He followed this notoriety in 2004 in psychological thriller The Machinist, before bulking up to become Batman in the big-budget Batman Begins. Throughout his career, Christian has won numerous awards, including a Golden Globe and Academy Award for his supporting role in 2010's The Fighter. In 2009, an audio recording of an incident involving Bale and director of photography, Shane Hurlbut, on the set of Terminator Salvation hit headlines. In the recording, Bale can be heard launching into an angry tirade after Hurlbut walked onto the set during an intense scene. Bale later gave a public apology. Aside from his film career, Bale is a father to daughter Emmeline, who he and his wife, Sandra Blažić welcomed in 2005.
